Bird Flu in Washington - Avian and H5N1
The Department of Health—working with local, state, federal and Canadian partners—has been planning for a potential pandemic bird flu outbreak and taking action to help protect the health of people in Washington State.
Estimates are that a pandemic bird flu influenza would cause over 200,000 deaths in our country, with as many as 5,000 fatalities in Washington. Washington could also expect 10,000-24,000 people needing hospital stays and 480,000-1,119,000 people requiring outpatient visits if bird flu hits. During a severe bird flu pandemic these numbers could be much higher.
Washington State needs to prepare for the Bird Flu.
