New bird flu outbreak in Asia

A poultry farm in South Korea has been hit by the bird flu, with some 6,000 chickens suspected to have died from the bird flu virus.

The H5N1 strain of avian influenza was discovered in the south west part of the country lying on a path for migratory birds.

Between December 2003 and March 2004, about 400,000 poultry at South Korean farms were infected by the bird flu virus.

During that outbreak, the country culled 5.3 million birds and was forced to spend huge amounts to stop the spread of the disease.

Indonesia’s health ministry says woman, 35, being treated for bird flu.
A 35-year-old bird flu patient was in ICU in an Indonesian hospital and has not died, as a senior Health Ministry official mistakenly said earlier.

Health Ministry official Nyoman Kandun apologized for the mix-up and said Indonesia’s death toll from the bird flu remains at 56. A spokesman for the Sulianti Saroso infectious diseases hospital also said the woman was alive.

US Citizens Told To Stockpile For Bird Flu Outbreak
US citizens in Hong Kong have been advised to build a three-month stockpile of food, medicine and water in their homes in case of a bird flu pandemic, a news report said Tuesday.

US citizens in Hong Kong have been advised to build a three-month stockpile of food, medicine and water in their homes in case of a bird flu pandemic, a news report said Tuesday.

An advisory has been sent out to all 60,000 registered US citizens in the former British colony urging them to prepare the stockpiles ahead of the coming winter flu season in case of a bird flu pandemic.

It suggests stockpiling 4.5 litres of water per person per day and to prepare water purification equipment in case of “complete infrastructure breakdown,” the South China Morning Post reported.
