Flu Experts Warn of Bird Flu Pandemic in USA

An Iowa native on the forefront of influenza surveillance says while knowledge of virus transmission has increased since previous pandemics, many challenges remain. Are you properly prepared for the bird flu?

Doctor Nancy Cox, who grew up on a farm near Spencer, is the chief of the influenza division at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

She says no vaccine to protect against the bird flu is available yet. At least three vaccines are under development, but there is no timeline on how soon a vaccine might be available.

Cox says bird flu is not the same as pandemic flu — it’s a pandemic threat. –>

Threat Of Bird Flu Pandemic Lingers - California

The threat of some sort of pandemic is still very much on the minds of public health officials. The most recent concern is the bird flu affecting Southeast Asia. It’s just one of many threats being addressed.

So far, scientists have recorded 249 human cases of the deadly strain of bird flu with 146 of these patients dying from the bird flu.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, M.D., National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases: “Sooner of later we’re going to get confronted with another influenza pandemic. It may not necessarily be the one th’atscirculating around now among chickens in Southeast Asia, but this should at least give us the impetus to get ourselves better prepared.”

Dr. Fauci: “We don’t understand what are the protective mechanisms that you need to protect someone against HIV infection, and until that scientific discovery occurs, we cannot predict how long it’s going to take to get an HIV vaccine.” –>

Bird Flu Vaccines Being Developed Show Possible Success

Three experimental vaccines which use live but weakversions of the H5N1 bird flu virus appear to protect animals from infection, and might offer a quick way to stockpile vaccines ahead of a bird flu pandemic, U.S. researchers said.

This new approach to respond to bird flu is already being tested in people, and might provide the start of a buildup of vaccines against various potential strains of bird flu pandemic.

“We have been developing live, attenuated influenza virus vaccines because they have properties that make them attractive vaccines for the prevention of pandemic influenza in humans,” the researchers wrote in the online journal Public Library of Science-Medicine.

Unlike the other experimental bird flu vaccines which are being developed, it takes only a single dose of a live, weakened bird flu vaccine to stimulate a good immune response, the bird flu researchers said. (more…)

China Working on Bird Flu Vaccine

Chinese researchers report that a new bird flu vaccine shows promise in early human tests.

Like the previously announced Glaxo and Sanofi bird flu vaccines, the Chinese H5N1 bird flu vaccine is given with an immune-boosting substance called an adjuvant.

Jiangtao Lin, MD, of Beijing’s Chinese-Japanese Friendship Hospital, and colleagues tested various doses of the bird flu vaccine in 120 adult volunteers aged 18-60.

Why is a low dose important? In an editorial accompanying the Lin report, British infectious bird flu disease specialist Iain Stephenson, MRCP, notes that if there’s a bird-flu pandemic, the –>
