Are you properly prepared for the bird flu?

A pandemic flu outbreak isn’t getting much media attention anymore, but it remains a serious threat that could quarantine thousands for weeks, if not months. It’s smart to be prepared, and Sedgwick County is trying to do its part. Its Web site has a “tool kit” for potential business disruption, updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, and information for consumers.

    Of 74 confirmed cases of bird flu in Indonesia this year, 56 have been fatal.
    As of November 29:

    111 cases have been reported worldwide this year, 76 of which were fatal. That compares with 97 cases in 2005, of which 42 were fatal.

    The World Health Organization has confirmed a total of 258 human cases, 154 of which were fatal. That’s a mortality rate of 59 percent.

    Bird flu bill OK’d by House; action needed by Senate

    Are you properly prepared for the bird flu?The House approved a $15 million pandemic flu bill that would help area hospitals get flu-fighting medicine and additional hospital beds.

    Rep. Barry Finegold, D-Andover, authored the legislation, which would authorize the state Department of Public Health to buy the medicine and beds hospitals needed. He said the state has to help local hospitals prepare for a bird flu pandemic, as far away and unlikely as it (bird flu) may seem.

    A poultry farm in South Korea has been hit by the bird flu, with some 6,000 chickens suspected to have died from the bird flu virus.

    The H5N1 strain of avian influenza was discovered in the south west part of the country lying on a path for migratory birds.

    Between December 2003 and March 2004, about 400,000 poultry at South Korean farms were infected by the bird flu virus.

    During that outbreak, the country culled 5.3 million birds and was forced to spend huge amounts to stop the spread of the disease.

    Indonesian Woman Being Treated for Bird Flu

    Washington State Bird Flu Pandemic PlanIndonesia’s health ministry says woman, 35, being treated for bird flu.
    A 35-year-old bird flu patient was in ICU in an Indonesian hospital and has not died, as a senior Health Ministry official mistakenly said earlier.

    Health Ministry official Nyoman Kandun apologized for the mix-up and said Indonesia’s death toll from the bird flu remains at 56. A spokesman for the Sulianti Saroso infectious diseases hospital also said the woman was alive.

    US Citizens Told To Stockpile For Bird Flu Outbreak Bird Flu in the USA
    US citizens in Hong Kong have been advised to build a three-month stockpile of food, medicine and water in their homes in case of a bird flu pandemic, a news report said Tuesday.

    An advisory has been sent to all 60,000 registered US citizens in the former British colony urging them to prepare the stockpiles ahead of the coming winter flu season. (more…)

    Stockpile for a Possible Bird Flu Outbreak

    US citizens in Hong Kong have been advised to build a three-month stockpile of food, medicine and water in their homes in case of a bird flu pandemic, a news report said Tuesday. Are you properly prepared for the bird flu?

    An advisory has been sent out to all 60,000 registered US citizens in the former British colony urging them to prepare the stockpiles ahead of the coming winter flu season in case of a bird flu pandemic.

    It suggests stockpiling 4.5 litres of water per person per day and to prepare water purification equipment in case of “complete infrastructure breakdown,” the South China Morning Post reported.
